Hello Readers! Welcome to the Release Day Celebration for the

In the Beginning: Dark Retellings of
Biblical Tales Anthology

presented by Month9Books!

Be sure to enter the giveaway found at the end of the post!

Happy Book Birthday!

in-the-beginning-cover

In the Beginning (Oct. 25, 2016) –Eight authors come together to build a powerful collection of dark young adult short stories inspired by the mysteries, faith, and darkness found within the Bible. Old Testament and New Testament, iconic and obscure figures alike are illuminated, explored, and re-envisioned throughout this charity anthology from Month9Books.

IN THE BEGINNING, ed. Laureen Cantwell and Georgia McBride

Daniel and the Dragon by Stephen Clements
A troubled orphan named Habakkuk dutifully follows his master, the prophet Daniel, into temples of blood-thirsty demon-gods, battles with unspeakable horrors, and bears witnesses to mind-breaking evil until his master’s zealous defiance of the king’s law seals their fate.

Babylon by Nicole Crucial
Far above the earth, in Second Eden, where moments and eternities all blur together, young Babylon befriends Sefer, the Book of Life. As Babylon awaits the moment she’ll fulfill her destiny, she and Sefer try to understand the world in which they live.

Last Will and Testament by Mike Hays
A homeless young boy, Baz, bears the weight of humanity on his shoulders and upon his body. When dark forces test a new-found friendship, Baz’s willingness to bear the ugliness of their world will be shaken.

The Demon Was Me by Sharon Hughson
Based on the story of the demon-possessed boy healed by Jesus, this tale provides a glimpse into a post-apocalyptic world where a teenage boy seeks to journey to a better land and yearns to discover the kind of man he’s meant to be, only to be hijacked by an evil spirit intent upon chipping away at the hope, faith, and resilience of its host.

The Deluge by Marti Johnson
A non-believer shares the story of Noah’s ark-building and the deadly downpour that follows. Fear, faithlessness, and the fallibility of mankind collide in a community where second chances aren’t unlimited and a better-late-than-never attitude just might be your doom.

Condemned by Elle O’Neill
Just sixteen-years-old, Barabbas finds himself pulled out of Routlege Academy and into a reality show competition—against Jesus himself—where the reward for the winner is life.

First Wife by Lora Palmer
In a first-person retelling of the saga of Jacob, Rachel and Leah, themes of family, deception, guilt, and heartache emerge amidst the first days of Leah’s marriage to Jacob—a marriage mired in trickery a mere week before Jacob was to marry Leah’s sister Rachel.

Emmaculate by Christina Raus
Based on the story of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, we enter the troubled mind of Emma, who finds herself torn between her religious upbringing and the purity ring that binds her to her boyfriend and the pregnancy that results from her relationship with another boy.

excerpt

From THE DELUGE, by Marti Johnson:

The stench of mildew and mold is heavy in our nostrils, and my lungs feel as though they are on fire. My breathing is audible in the lulls between the thunderclaps. My mother huddles, shivering, propped between two rocks. She is coughing painfully, and I can hear her teeth chattering.

It is hard to breathe because the air itself is full of water.

A deeper shadow has fallen across the side of the mountain on which we are sheltering. I pull aside the brambles, and gasp in amazement when I realize what it is. “Look!” I call to the others, and point at the sight. The ark has risen with the water, and now bobs up and down. It sits high in the water. We hear nothing from it but the creaking of the wood timbers and the sound of the branches and rocks on the hillside scraping against its hull.

Now we’ll open it up to Caroline and find out more about what makes this author so great!

Our Question:

Can you talk about the influences that have inspired your writing throughout your life? We’re curious to know what books/authors were favorites as a child, what you read in middle and high school that may have changed the way you think, and your main inspirations as an adult.

Caroline’s answer:

Books were one of the things my parents always said yes to, so I gobbled them up as much as I could. I also grew up around the block from one of the biggest libraries in the Bay Area, the Santa Clara Public Library, and I went there all the time. As a kid I wasn’t really discerning between good and bad books. I just liked books. Period. When we went on camping trips we would stop at a general store and I would get strawberry soda and a paperback. That was my treat.

Lois Duncan quickly stood out as one of my favorite authors, and I didn’t even realize until I started doing these blog posts that Into the Light and Stranger With My Face are actually kind of similar. It wasn’t intentional at all, but influences seep in when we’re not paying attention. Of that I’m sure.

My tween years, though we never would’ve called them that in 1986, were full of Sweet Valley High. I don’t know many readers from my generation who didn’t love Jessica and Elizabeth. I think I was in sixth grade when an older cousin of mine caught me reading at the dinner table and later she mailed me a letter, writing to me that books were a lot like food, some are more enriching than others, and that I shouldn’t spoil my appetite with nothing but dessert. She must not have thought very much of SVH, but she had a point also. It was right about that time that I read Little Women for the first time, meeting my soul mate, Josephine March. I can’t think of any of literary character who spoke to me as much as Jo. So I said farewell to Jessica and Elizabeth.

After Jo, I met Anne Shirley and wow, did we have a lot in common. Spunky, mouthy, fearless, I loved everything about Anne Shirley. I even envied her red hair. I wanted a Gilbert Blythe to call me carrot top. I did a stint as a redhead in college, but it never took. Now, my hair is pink. It’s all about compromise, I guess.

In high school I didn’t read novels as much as I wrote poetry, so I transferred my love to Emily Dickenson. I didn’t understand her need to be a recluse, which is maybe why she fascinated me. I can recite my favorite poem of hers to this day. Words really stick. Poetry ended up being my first foray into publication. Published at nineteen? I’ll take it!

In my twenties I lost my teenage angst, got married and had kids, so poetry fell to the waste side. Books became my escape from everything and everyone and mysteries were my book of choice. Sandra Brown is my absolute favorite and when she tweeted to me I fangirled like an idiot. What I love about Sandra Brown is that there’s always a steamy scene, and there’s always an audible gasp because I did not see something coming. I think I’ve definitely adapted that technique in my own writing. That is not to say I am as good as Sandra because I am not. The Witness is my favorite book of hers.

When I finally decided that writing was all I wanted to do, I started reading everything in sight. Amazon Prime might be the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. I live thirty minutes from the nearest bookstore and traffic stinks, so books right to my door in two days? Yes, please.

The only other job I ever wanted besides writer was teacher, and I can still remember the moment the light bulb went off that writing for young people is what I’m best suited for. Since then, I’ve never looked back.

Thanks so much, Caroline! Love Lois Duncan and let’s just say Amazon Prime is a friend, ha ha.

excerpt

Seth rolls his eyes. He clearly doesn’t get it.
So I inch closer to him. “For centuries holy people … nuns … monks … hermits … they locked themselves away and took on the sins of the world. They were living sacrifices of prayer, and it made the whole world better. They kept knowledge alive through the Dark Ages. Vestals are living sacrifices too. We are reminders that you don’t need chips and you don’t need texts, and you shouldn’t give away every last piece of yourself for one more hit.”
“Because selling yourself is so much better?”
I square my shoulders. “Yes.”
“But you’ll never have a normal life. Doesn’t that bother you?”
“Of course not. Not when ‘normal’ is so messed up. Not when ‘normal’ gave a whole generation of people brain cancer.”

Cover Reveal: Chasing Truth by Julie Cross presented by Entangled Teen with Giveaway

EntangledTeenComingSoon

A story of a girl who’s in a family of con artists? Sign me up!

Welcome to the Cover Reveal for

Chasing Truth by Julie Cross

presented by Entangled Teen!

Read on for a special message from Julie!!

Special Note from the Author, Julie Cross:

I’m so excited to reveal this cover! I saw it months ago and not only loved it, but felt like I finally had something tangible to show the vibe of this story. Chasing Truth began as a teen romance featuring a girl with a unique past–she’s from a family of con-artists. Until recently, Ellie spent her entire life living under multiple identities, being everyone and anyone. So falling for new neighbor, Miles, as herself is brand new territory and that definitely creates a bit of a rocky relationship for my two leads. While the story is still built on all of that, it also evolved into a slightly different recipe as I wrote.

Chasing Truth is 1 part mystery/thriller, 1 part high school drama, 1 part family story, and 2 parts (maybe 3…) romance. If you’re a fan of the TV series Veronica Mars, you’ll find that Chasing Truth has a similar feel. I can’t wait for all of you to have a chance to the read the book in September, but for now, I’ll have to settle for showing off this beautiful cover!

Countdown!

At Holden Prep, the rich and powerful rule the school—and they’ll do just about anything to keep their dirty little secrets hidden.

When former con artist Eleanor Ames’s homecoming date commits suicide, she’s positive there’s something more going on. The more questions she asks, though, the more she crosses paths with Miles Beckett. He’s sexy, mysterious, arrogant…and he’s asking all the same questions.

Eleanor might not trust him—she doesn’t even like him—but they can’t keep their hands off of each other. Fighting the infuriating attraction is almost as hard as ignoring the fact that Miles isn’t telling her the truth…and that there’s a good chance he thinks she’s the killer.

Loyalty has no limits

Raised from a pup by Greek hero, Odysseus, Argos has come to learn the true meaning of love and loyalty. But when Odysseus leaves for the Trojan War, little does Argos know it will be 20

years before he sees his master again. With Odysseus gone his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, are easy prey for neighboring kings and the Gods themselves.

But Argos was tasked to keep them safe until Odysseus returns and that is a promise he is

determined to keep – whatever the cost. Told through his eyes, Argos recounts the story of his

life – his pain, his joy, his triumphs and failures; his endurance in the face of hardships almost too great to believe.

Above all else, Argos strives to do what is right – and to remain loyal to his King when all others have given up hope. To live long enough to see his beloved master one more time.

This epic myth of love and loyalty proves that a dog really is man’s best friend.

No amount of training has prepared Jaevid Broadfeather for the frontlines of battle. Now facing the true horrors of war, with Luntharda looming on the horizon, Jaevid has begun to question everything he thought about his heritage. But in an instant, even that slips through Jaevid’s fingers as he steps from the safety of his dragon’s saddle into the depths of his mother’s wild homeland—the kingdom of the gray elves.

Stranded in Luntharda with his partner, Lieutenant Jace Rordin, Jaevid must finally confront the demons of his own past as he uncovers the truth about a war that began before he was ever born. OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES:

Fledgling

When Jaevid Broadfeather is given the rare opportunity to become a dragonrider for the king’s army, the 15-year-old boy has no idea that he is part of a conspiracy that will rock the very foundations of the kingdom.

Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal. But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.

While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor.

Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test.

Avian

Jaevid wants to pass his Avian year of training . . . but will he even survive it?

What kind of power is lurking inside him? After a year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a three-month interlude. But when he returns to find the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about to happen. Every fiber of his being is pushed to the breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian year, preparing for the final graduation test of the battle scenario. But there is more standing in his way than a few pushups and fancy sword moves. Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It seems obvious to him that this is some kind of message about how the war started long ago—until Felix assures him the king is very much alive. With his strange powers growing stronger by the day, and that violent dream replaying in his mind every night, Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian year or not—he wonders if he will even survive it.

The truth will soon be set loose.
