Blurb:
Werewolf Sean Holloway treats the village marketplace like a sexual buffet, though his charm does little to win over his latest entrée of choice. Whether because of Jem Stonehouse’s unique scent, her headstrong nonchalance, or the fact he is forbidden to see her by his pack’s rules, Sean wants her.
When Jem is nothing but flippant toward his advances, he pursues her with vigour, stealing moments alone with her without a libido-driven agenda.
The new and heady experience for him drives their relationship beyond romantic interest, and straight toward love.
That is, until Jem learns the truth about Sean’s heritage. Knowledge of the existence of werewolves leads to only one outcome: death.
In this prequel to Darkness & Light*, we are taken back in time, to the very beginning of Jem and Sean’s love-across-the-centuries relationship.
Did it end there? Or did Sean defy his own pack to save the woman he loves?

Book Blast and giveaway: Darkness and Light by J.A. Belfield @JABelfield

Forest fog

Today marks the RE-release of J.A. Belfield’s Darkness & Light, first book in the Holloway Pack series.

And to celebrate it’s release, as well as her birthday (which is also TODAY) there’s a GREAT giveaway going on.

But first, let’s check out the book.

Darkness & Light

Jem Stonehouse, a housewife with a neurotic husband bent on keeping her in line, dreams about werewolves in, what she believes, is a bid to escape boredom.

Sean Holloway is a werewolf, living a charade within the human race, whose mind drifts to a bond he shares with a woman he hasn’t met — at least, not in this lifetime.

Apart, the two are safe but live unfulfilled lives.

Together, they’ll become prey to rival packs just as they have been for hundreds of years.

When their worlds collide, and not for the first time, instinct takes over. Dreams become reality. Futures are uncertain. To keep history from repeating itself, Sean must teach Jem about his heritage, convince her of her role, and win her love.

Can Jem accept her destiny before it’s too late, or is her inner wolf buried too deep to save her future with Sean?

You can add it to your Goodreads by clicking on the cover art above.

Back of the book:

Her soul remembers his touch, even if she doesn’t.

With only three days until the wraith king turns the earth into an all-you-can-eat buffet, Addison Beckett is forced to enlist brooding sentinel Asher Green’s help to unlock the Mortal Machine. According to the founder, all she has to do is find the sanctuary—the same sanctuary she can’t remember because Asher erased her memories.

Trying to save humanity while navigating Asher’s lies is a royal pain. But the more time she and Asher spend together, the harder her soul tries to remind her what else he’s made her forget—that he loves her, wants her, needs her.

When she’s trapped by the wraith king and forced to pick who will stand by her in the coming battle, Addison is faced with an impossible choice: the sentinel she loves who refuses to love her back, or a powerful stranger who insists they’re meant to be together. Whoa! Here’s a deleted scene just for you guys!!!

AsherPoster2

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This scene was originally part of chapter 10, but alas, it didn’t fit into the final version. Remy and Addison are in the infirmary while he re-stitches her stab wound, and they’re discussing Asher.

“How can I do fix Asher when the very thought of touching me gives the guy the heebs?” I asked. “He’s barely looked at me since I got stabbed. Kind of hard to have a meaningful conversation with his ear.”

Remy glanced toward the door and concentrated on prodding my bandage again. Really low, he said, “Catch him when he think you not looking. See what I see.”

A roar of WTH went through my head. “What are you saying?”

“What are you saying about what?” Asher blew into the room like a category 5 hurricane. He’d changed his shirt. Probably got a wrinkle in the other one while wrestling with the Colonel. Couldn’t have that, oh no. Why did he have to wear blue? His eyes were always on the north side of wow, but put more blue on him, and the sight of them sucked all the sense out of my head and made me wonder if I should check for drool. How much more mental could I get? Probably not a good question for me to ask after recent events.

“Nothing,” Remy and I blurted at once. Guilty, who us?

“What doing here?” Remy asked with a curl to his lip, and the tension in the room grew into a snarling beast. “Get lost ‘till I finish up here. You don’ want to be here while I holding sharp things.”

“Are you threatening me, sentinel?” Asher drew up his fists and edged closer. “Remember who you’re talking to. Why don’t you leave and let me take care of the Architect?”

Remy gave a scoffing laugh. “Because you so good at that. And I see real clear now who I talking to, and he a stupid ass I wouldn’t follow out of a burning building right now. Addy my boss, and I do what she say. You got a problem with that, you can piss off.”

I might have laughed if his sarcastic tone wasn’t full of bitch slaps. I glanced back and forth between them, at Asher’s bruise that had turned the skin under his left eye almost black and the aggressive heat coming off King Kong. “Will someone tell me what’s going on between you two?” I asked. Staring at Remy, who squirmed and looked away, I frowned. “Did you clock Asher in the face? Ah, shit, did you tell him?” I’d asked Remy to have a look at my memories so I could figure out why there were so many foggy patches in there.

“Tell me what?” Asher asked through set teeth.

Crap. “Nothing. Why are you two chewing at each other? We’re kind of fighting a war here and don’t have time for this macho crap.”

“A simple disagreement between gentlemen,” Asher said. “Remy needs to keep his nose in his own business.”

Gentlemen, ha! Remy might have been one, but Asher was about as far from it as someone could get. “A disagreement about what?” I asked.

After a few visual razor blades passed between them, Remy said, “Nothing you need worry about. My brah and I hash it out later when thing calm down a little, yeah?”

Asher shook his head. “No, you’ll shut your mouth and let me do my job. Now, what were you two talking about when I came into the room?”

“None of your business,” I said, hating not knowing what their beef was and if it had something to do with me and what Remy may or may not have seen in my swiss cheese mind since I hadn’t gotten around to asking yet. Or, rather, my inner chicken wanted no part of.

“Our feisty little kolohe here ask if we get all the wraith last night, and I tell her all but one far as we know,” Remy said.

“Wait, what?” I blurted. “You both went back out hunting without me? Dammit, Asher, you’re not supposed to go without me. Why are you still trying to cut me out of this? Because I’m fine, totally normal and can take care of myself.” No, I didn’t sound desperate. Why didn’t I just slap a sign on my forehead that said I was keeping something big from him? I sat up, regretted it a second later when pain took a dive through me. “Ouch.”

“Oh yeah, you’re in such fine form right now,” Asher said, jabbing a finger at me. “Lay down before I—”

“Yeah, yeah, before you lay me down. God, you are like a broken record.” I lay down, offering him a snarky smile. “Happy? Oh right, you’re never happy.” What Remy had said festered in me, that Asher needed healing—I wondered if he still thought that after having punched him in the face. I pretty much knew that already, but I still didn’t know what to do about it. Maybe I shouldn’t have been so snippy with him, but he ripped off my civilized front and brought out my inner beast.

“Be still now, kolohe.” Remy came at me with a syringe roughly the size of a telephone pole, grinning at whatever horrified expression I had on my face. “Just a little prick and you feel betta, yeah?”

Asher was a little prick, and he never made me feel better. Ashamed for having thought that, I swallowed a few times to keep the queasiness inside from making it outside. “Do you really have to do that?”

Asher made a small sound, but by the time I pointed my stare at him, he’d taken great interest in the cabinet along the wall. It was all good, though. I didn’t need to see him roll his eyes at me again.

“You rather I stitch you without freezing?” Humor added a rich tone to Remy’s voice.

I groaned and thrust my head back into the pillow. “Why do you enjoy torturing me so much? Maybe you can just give me a good right hook and knock me out.”

“I give you a good hook, and I break your delicate neck. Just close those pretty eyes, and I make it quick.”

Smiling, I said, “Flattery will get you nowhere with me, bub.”

I jumped at the sound rumbling out of the corner. Did Asher just…growl? When I searched him out where he’d gone to sulk by the door, Remy impaled me.

“Ouch, that freakin’ hurt!”

“I don’ feel a thing.” Remy finished injecting the cold stuff that began to deaden the pain.

“Smart ass.”

“Better than a dumb ass. Now, I stitch.”

Breaths heaved in and out of my nose. “Oh, hell, do I really have to be awake for this?”

“Brah,” Remy said, “may you make youself useful and talk to our kolohe, distract her, yeah?”

My hand wanted to reach for my sensei, but I made a fist in the sheets. Asher glared at the floor as if it had just kicked him in the jewels. Arms straight at his sides, he made two stiff steps toward me before returning to the door. “I’ll get Sophia.”

My heart tripped. “Sophia’s busy. Just forget it and go away.” I met Remy’s eyes, and even though his face was carefully blank, anger stared back at me. “I’m fine. Just do it.”

One day, a character and scene popped into J. A. Belfield’s head, and she started controlling the little people inside her imagination, as though she were the puppet master and they her toys. Questions arose: What would happen if …? How would they react if …? Who would they meet if …? Before she knew it, a singular scene had become an entire movie. The characters she controlled began to hold conversations. Their actions reflected the personalities she bestowed upon them. Within no time, they had a life, a lover, a foe, family … they had Become.

One day, she wrote down her thoughts. She’s yet to stop.

And her amazing cover …

FinalOA

How about some Q & A with our awesome author? Please welcome my agency sister Theresa Paolo!

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? What was your inspiration?

From a very young age I’ve always wanted to be some sort of writer. It went from an author to a journalist to an advice columnist to a columnist to a poet back to a journalist and then back to writing books. It’s kind of always been a part of me. I wrote my first book when I was six or seven. Granted it was a picture book but the story was still there.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It used to take me a month to write a first draft. Now it takes me 3-4. Add in revisions and I’d say about six months total.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? Do you have a specific place and/or time you like to write?

Oh I wish! I have to squeeze in writing whenever I can. Usually after work, I can manage  a couple of hours. Friday night and Saturday are usually my best bet. I like to write either on my couch or I take my laptop to my parents’ house and sit on their deck. And if I’m going somewhere on the weekends, my boyfriend drives and I’m in the passenger seat with my laptop.

How do you balance family and writing?

I’m lucky that I don’t have kids and I can be selfish with my time. I don’t know how you parents do it. Though, I still have a hard time balancing since I try to write whenever I have free time which usually means cancelling on friends and holding my finger up while my boyfriend is trying to talk to me, just so I can get the sentence out of my head and onto the screen.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Everywhere. The news. A magazine headline. A conversation I over hear. They just pop into my head at the most random times. I keep about three notebooks in my bag at all times so when one smacks into me I can jot it down and not forget. Because if I say I will remember it chances are I won’t. (Never) Again came to me when I was watching breaking news about a school shooting.

How hard is it to get published?

HARD! Lol There are cases where it comes easy to people and you think that’ll be you. Sadly that’s usually not the case. It took me five years to get an agent. I queried five different books and had over 200 rejections. But I refused to give up. I kept going. It really does only take one yes. My time on submission was much shorter than trying to get an agent. After three months on submission I signed with Intermix Berkley Penguin.

Do you have any suggestions to help aspiring writers better themselves and their craft? If so, what are they?

Write. That is the best advice. You can read book after book about writing, but if you’re not actually doing any writing you’re not going to improve. So write and make mistakes, but learn from those mistakes. Find a critique partner or 9 (like me) one(s) that is honest and isn’t afraid to hurt your feelings and will help you get your story to where it needs to be while holding your hand and telling you you’re awesome don’t give up. Also critiquing other peoples work will do wonders for your own writing. When critiquing you are finding problems and when you go to write you become more aware of those things.

What are your favorite books and which authors inspire you?

Oh I have so many. Anything Sarah Dessen, Simone Elkeles, Toni Blake, Susan Mallery and Kristan Higgins, Marie Force and Cassie Mae. I also love Erin McCarthy’s True Believer’s series, J. Lynn’s Wait For You series, okay I’m going to stop! Inspiration would definitely be Sarah Dessen. R.L. Stine and Hailey Abbott.

I actually hated reading in school. Hated it. Then I discovered Goosebump books and then Fear street and I actually enjoyed reading. When I got a little older I discovered Hailey Abbott and then years later I found Sarah Dessen. Her books are what inspired me. I started out writing YA contemporary and it’s from there I branched out and discovered new books, new writers, new genres and new categories.

Last summer before (Never) Again was released I went to BEA in NYC and before we even checked in I spotted the Penguin book truck. I was so excited I ran over and as I was getting closer I stopped dead. My mom caught up to me and was like why did you stop. And I was like OMG! That is Sarah Dessen. OMG. The next thing I know I’m standing there completely fan girling and telling her she’s the reason I started writing. She was so sweet and didn’t hide behind the truck and try to get away from my babbling. Later I tweeted a pic of us and she tweeted me back saying she couldn’t wait to read my book. I died. It was the best day ever. She is my inspiration and meeting her was a dream come true.

Do you read reviews before reading a book? Have you read the reviews on your books? What are the effects of a good versus a bad review on your writing?

Sometimes I do. But I also used to be that girl who would flip to the last page and read before even starting. I stopped doing that, but I still tend to read reviews. Have I read reviews of my own books? Sadly yes. I’m a huge believer that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Everyone of us has different tastes and likes and dislikes and I always encourage honesty. However, bad reviews still hurt. No matter how you look at it they burn. Bad.

Bad reviews can be discouraging. They can also make you question every little detail in your writing. It’s hard not to let it bother you. The good reviews obviously do the total opposite. They encourage and make me feel like I’m cut out for this. I can do this. I got it. I think I’ll always look at my reviews. It’s really hard for me not to look. It’s like when they tell you not to touch something because it’s hot and you touch it anyway. I just can’t help myself.

For an aspiring writer, what do you feel are certain do’s and don’ts for getting their material published?

Do accept constructive criticism.

Do know the difference between constructive criticism and just criticism.

Do get a critique partner

Do follow the law of BIC (Butt in Chair)

Do network

Don’t make a bad name for yourself on social media

Don’t think you are the next J.K. Rowling

Don’t reply to agents with any negative comments towards them or question their credibility (You’d be surprised at the horror stories I’ve heard. And agents talk.)

Don’t give up

What are you working on now?

What am I not working on? I’m finishing up True Love and Magic Tricks with Becca Ann under my pen name Tessa Marie. It’s a prequel and a novella to our Bed Series.

Kaylee Sperling is a social butterfly with a million acquaintances, but no real close friends. The closest thing she has is her pet gerbil, Mr. Pippi, and 150 notes from a random classmate who won’t reveal who he is. But she’s crossing her fingers it’s the self-proclaimed magician and total hottie, Nate Hatfield. Nate needs an assistant for the upcoming talent show. When he spots Kaylee folding herself in half during gym class stretches, he nervously asks for help with his magic act. But after a disappearing mishap, resulting in an accident with one of Kaylee’s only friends, Mr. Pippi, Nate must figure out how not only to keep his assistant, but someone who’s come to mean much more to him than his illusions.

I’m also working on a rewrite for a YA contemporary book about bullying, I’m working on two NA’s and am hoping I’ll be able to continue the Again series. I have two other YA’s that I bounce back to. Oh and I have another YA contemporary I’m editing.
