Character Interview with Mackenzie Thorne from After Dark

After Dark (The 19th Year, #1)

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13348320-after-dark

Me: ‘Hey Everybody! Today I am thrilled to have Mackenzie Thorne in the blog studio for an interview. She’s the Main character from Emi Gayle’s debut book, After Dark. Come on in, Ms. Thorne.’  *cheering* ‘Welcome, Mac. Er, can I call you Mac?’

Mac: ‘Please do. I really hate all the other names people like to call me’.

Me: ‘We’re so excited you could make it. I know you’ve been busy hanging out in graveyards and figuring out what paranormal creature you want to be once you hit the awesome age of nineteen. So, I’ve been running over my fact sheet … let’s see … Senior in high school? Check. Single? You are single, right?’

Mac: ‘Of course.’

Me: ‘Under race it says, er … Changeling. from your dark hair, I would have guessed your heritage Italian or Portuguese myself. Hmm. Changeling, is that somewhere in  Australia?’ Mac sits forward, learning toward me a little, her head cocked in my direction.

Mac: ‘New Zealand. Where else?’

Winn: ‘Don’t listen to her.’ Winn ( the hero) chimes in from where he’s sitting right next to Mac. ‘A Changeling is a creature who can, until her nineteenth birthday, choose any supernatural form that exists and change into it. Mac though, she’s from right here in the U.S.A, Rune, North Caroline to be exact. She’s not that different that you or I.’

Me: ‘Oh. Okay, not New Zealand, then. Very funny, Mac. Thanks for being here, Winn.’

Mac: ‘You’re absolutely welcome.’  He shifts his glasses, pushing them up his nose.

Me: ‘My notes describe Winn as a sort of brainiac-geek.’ I glance over at the handsome blond boy. ‘I don’t see that at all, do you, Mac?’

Mac: She turns toward him and back to me. ‘Of course I do.’

Me: I mean, he may be smart but he’s totally hot and adorable …

Mac snorts a laugh.

Me: ‘… and  I just said that out loud didn’t I?’

Winn’s cheeks pink-up.

Me: ‘Aw Sheeze. Sorry.  Anyway, Winn, can you tell us how you met Mac, and how you got mixed up in this whole business?’

Winn: This time, he takes off his glasses, big deep brown eyes starting back at me. ‘We met at school, though getting mixed up in the whole business is another story. Let’s just say, I’m kinda bound not to talk about it, but well … if we hadn’t been paired up for the school project, I’m 100% sure nothing would have happened between us.’

Mac snorts another laugh.

Winn: ‘What?’ He turns to her.

Mac: ‘Nothing. Carry on.’

Me: So something has definitely happened between you two, then? Are you a couple?

‘Yes. No.’

Me: ‘Hmmm.’

The two turn toward each other. Definitely a couple.

Me: ‘Changing into any supernatural form that exists sounds like a blast, Mac. Until you have to settle on just one. Do you like any one form more than another?’

Mac: ‘Good god, no. They all suck for various reasons.’

Me: ‘I suppose you have people trying to influence you. Your family perhaps?’

Winn: ‘They can’t influence her. That’s part of why her parents are who they are. The council does no influencing either. It’s all part of the rules.’

Me: ‘And what the heck happens if you don’t choose by nineteen? Do you turn into a pumpkin at midnight? Ha ha.’ *I clear my throat.* ‘Sorry.’

Mac raises an eyebrow. ‘A pumpkin? Why would I turn into a pumpkin?’

Winn: It’s a fairytale story … where Cinderella has to return from the ball … Winn stops and rolls his eyes and faces me. She’s not much into fairytales. Anyway, you know that’s a good question. And soon, I’m going to find out because now … that’s my job. He gives me a definite head nod.

Me: ‘Your job? Could you explain that, Winn?’

Winn: ‘For that info, you’ll have to read the book.’ He winks at me, and Mac gives him a friendly punch in the arm. ‘What was that for?’

Mac: ‘You know.’

These two are too cute together.

Me: ‘I imagine her ability is quite rare. All that jumping from form to form must be exhausting, but I don’t suppose there’s any danger.  Uh, is there?’

Mac: ‘Danger? Not for me. Only for you.’ Mac eyes me in a way that makes me wonder … just what supernatural creature she’d picked for this interview.  I hope it’s not a vampire, or hungry.

Me: ‘Ookay? But you probably prefer humans, and a human form, am I right?’ I glance at Winn and swallow as Mac’s forehead creases. Clearly, that’s not the right answer.  ‘I’m still perfectly safe, right? We’re all just friends talking. Why don’t you tell me all about your friends, Mac. How you like to spend your time.’

Mac: ‘Friends? I really don’t do this whole ‘friend’ thing you humans do. Way too clingy. If you can’t manage your own life on your own, what’s the point?’

Suze: ‘Hey! I resemble that remark.’ In has walked one of the strangest looking creatures around, dressed in parachute pants, a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops, I don’t know whether to laugh or bury my head in my hands. Fashionista, Suze is not. ‘I’m your friend, aren’t I, Mac?’ He bats his lashes. ‘Right?’

Mac: ‘Sure, whatever.’

Suze: ‘Goody!’ The clapping that commences can be described none other than by a giddy 2-year old in a six-foot-tall demon suit.

Me: ‘Suze? I have you in my notes as one of Mac’s ‘friends’, so nice you could make it (thought I don’t remember you being invited) Do I even want to ask how you’re involved in all this craziness?’

Suze: ‘I get to have all the fun.’ He grins like the Cheshire cat.

Me: ‘Winn, for my readers at home, can you shed some light on this fellow and how he figures in with Mac choosing which supernatural form she will take?’

Winn: ‘Let’s just say that Suze is … body armor … and like body armor, not all is as it seems. Kevlar is essentially a fabric and can withstand bullets and bullets can pass through metal. Go figure, right? It’s all in how it’s packaged.’

Me: I lean forward in my seat. And you two still aren’t answering my questions, what happens if she doesn’t choose by her ninetieth birthday, and what role does Winn play in the decision, Mac? Why do I get the feeling you’re going to make us read to find out? You are, aren’t’ you?

Suze: ‘Oh yeah, they can’t tell you that. Nooooobody can tell you that. ‘Cause noooooobody knows.’ Suze taunts me like a four year old with a secret.

Me: Well guys, you heard it here first. I guess we’ll have to read After Dark to see what Mac finally decides and how Winn and Suze fit into this tale. Speaking of which, Suze, buddy, can you put the sound man down. We don’t usually lift him by his ankle because he got too close to our guests. *sigh*

Anyway … I know I can’t wait to read this book! Good luck choosing, Mac. It was great to meet you. I don’t envy your decision, although I’ve always been fond of water nymphs myself. I grimace while Suze pets my cats and I turn to Winn, ‘he won’t eat my pets, will he?’ Winn’s shrug does not give me confidence.

Mac, I hope your senior year is great and good luck with picking the whole ‘witch or ghost or zombie’ thing. Thanks for coming and bringing your, uh, friends. Winn is adorable and Suze is … Oh Lord what is he doing now …

So that’s our interview!  How about it, guys? Will you read it to find out what’s going on?
