Happy Book Birthday, Jennie!

Poppy Mayberry Cover

What if your teacher could read your mind just because she was born on a Thursday? Or the kid next to you in class could turn back the clock just because he was a ‘Wednesday”? In the quirky town of Nova, all of this is normal, but one thing is not—Poppy Mayberry. As an almost-eleven-year-old Monday, she should be able to pass notes in class or brush her dog, Pickle, without lifting a finger. But her Monday telekinesis still has some kinks, and that plate of spaghetti she’s passing may just end up on someone’s head. And if that’s not hard enough, practically perfect Ellie Preston is out to get her, and Principal Wible wants to send her to remedial summer school to work on her powers! It’s enough to make a girl want to disappear…if only she were a Friday.

excerpt

From Chapter One:

That’s when it got weird. What I imagined actually happened.

In like a millisecond after my thought, the sparkly headband literally flew off her head, without a push, shake, or anything. It smashed on the SMART Board directly behind Mrs. Flannagan. The pieces scattered across the floor. A few of them even hit grossy Mark. His dirty finger immediately pulled out of his nose.

“Who did that?” Ellie’s head whipped around and her hair smacked Veronica in the face. Ellie’s eyes searched down the rows, one by one. She was using her powers on us yet again. But at that point, who was I to comment on using powers? I put her in this position in the first place by using mine. I thought so, at least.

Before she got into my head, I quickly changed to thoughts of my dog Pickle. If Ellie looked in, she would see dog poop and dirty fur. Nothing that could incriminate me for what just happened.

But someone knew it was me. Veronica smirked. I winked back.

“Poppy Mayberry!” Mrs. Flannagan’s nostrils flared as she stomped toward me like a big red bull charging. “How dare you use your powers in this classroom!” Her pudgy hand pointed about a foot above the door to a plaque stating the number-one rule of Nova Elementary: NO POWER USAGE!

Although I should have been ashamed of the awful trick I had just played, I couldn’t stop the giant smile from spreading across my face. Finally! My telekinesis was here. That’s when I knew that I, Poppy Rose Mayberry, was officially a Monday.

Mercy’s family is back together and the threat of danger appears to have passed. But any relief she feels is short lived as she is ripped from her body and thrown in jail. Gage and Nathaniel’s plans to break Mercy out won’t exactly be easy. Now we’ll open it up to Caroline and find out more about what makes this author so great!

Our Question:

Can you talk about the influences that have inspired your writing throughout your life? We’re curious to know what books/authors were favorites as a child, what you read in middle and high school that may have changed the way you think, and your main inspirations as an adult.

Caroline’s answer:

Books were one of the things my parents always said yes to, so I gobbled them up as much as I could. I also grew up around the block from one of the biggest libraries in the Bay Area, the Santa Clara Public Library, and I went there all the time. As a kid I wasn’t really discerning between good and bad books. I just liked books. Period. When we went on camping trips we would stop at a general store and I would get strawberry soda and a paperback. That was my treat.

Lois Duncan quickly stood out as one of my favorite authors, and I didn’t even realize until I started doing these blog posts that Into the Light and Stranger With My Face are actually kind of similar. It wasn’t intentional at all, but influences seep in when we’re not paying attention. Of that I’m sure.

My tween years, though we never would’ve called them that in 1986, were full of Sweet Valley High. I don’t know many readers from my generation who didn’t love Jessica and Elizabeth. I think I was in sixth grade when an older cousin of mine caught me reading at the dinner table and later she mailed me a letter, writing to me that books were a lot like food, some are more enriching than others, and that I shouldn’t spoil my appetite with nothing but dessert. She must not have thought very much of SVH, but she had a point also. It was right about that time that I read Little Women for the first time, meeting my soul mate, Josephine March. I can’t think of any of literary character who spoke to me as much as Jo. So I said farewell to Jessica and Elizabeth.

After Jo, I met Anne Shirley and wow, did we have a lot in common. Spunky, mouthy, fearless, I loved everything about Anne Shirley. I even envied her red hair. I wanted a Gilbert Blythe to call me carrot top. I did a stint as a redhead in college, but it never took. Now, my hair is pink. It’s all about compromise, I guess.

In high school I didn’t read novels as much as I wrote poetry, so I transferred my love to Emily Dickenson. I didn’t understand her need to be a recluse, which is maybe why she fascinated me. I can recite my favorite poem of hers to this day. Words really stick. Poetry ended up being my first foray into publication. Published at nineteen? I’ll take it!

In my twenties I lost my teenage angst, got married and had kids, so poetry fell to the waste side. Books became my escape from everything and everyone and mysteries were my book of choice. Sandra Brown is my absolute favorite and when she tweeted to me I fangirled like an idiot. What I love about Sandra Brown is that there’s always a steamy scene, and there’s always an audible gasp because I did not see something coming. I think I’ve definitely adapted that technique in my own writing. That is not to say I am as good as Sandra because I am not. The Witness is my favorite book of hers.

When I finally decided that writing was all I wanted to do, I started reading everything in sight. Amazon Prime might be the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. I live thirty minutes from the nearest bookstore and traffic stinks, so books right to my door in two days? Yes, please.

The only other job I ever wanted besides writer was teacher, and I can still remember the moment the light bulb went off that writing for young people is what I’m best suited for. Since then, I’ve never looked back.

Thanks so much, Caroline! Love Lois Duncan and let’s just say Amazon Prime is a friend, ha ha.

Happy Book Birthday, Elisa!

Beneath the Void Cover

Sadie Reynolds is drowning.

Months have passed since Ian Daniels and Newton Daily opened fire at Atwood High school, killing dozens of students before turning the guns on themselves.

Determined to pay tribute to her fallen classmates and teachers, Sadie’s thrown herself into the memorial project at the newly rebuilt school. But it’s not enough. Horrific dreams of the shooting intertwined with memories of the night her mother was murdered keep her up at night and haunt her during the day.

The constant stream of hate raining down on her from faceless social media trolls only make matters worse. Her boyfriend, Hayden brings the only source of relief when he sneaks in to sleep next to her on nights her dad is at work.

Desperate for normalcy, Sadie fills every waking moment of her day with anything to take her mind off her pain. If she’s exhausted, she’ll be too tired to acknowledge the new threat gunning for her.

BENEATH the VOID is book 2 in Elisa Dane’s Fighting Chance series, a hard-hitting and unapologetically raw look at teen violence in schools and the aftermath of learning to pick up the pieces and heal.

In the After Cover

Sadie Reynolds is a liar with secrets. At school, she’s part of the popular crowd known as AE, despite being broken inside. She hides it well. She has to. The slightest bit of imperfection will land her in the same shoes as her Geeky neighbor named Ian.

Ian and his only friend are the object of Sadie’s friends’ ridicule, ire, and entertainment. The AE rule the school with intimidation and retribution against anyone who would dare question their supremacy.

Sadie steers clear of most of it, terrified someone will find out her secret. She isn’t the least bit perfect. In fact, she suffers from PTSD stemming from the murder of her mother right before her eyes when she was a child. She can barely cope from day-to-day, hiding her truth and trying to fit in. But she knows it’s only a matter of time.

Hayden is a “Waverly,” a kid with the misfortune of living in the small farming town of Waverly that borders the very affluent Lexington Parrish. The AE doesn’t mix with “Waverlies.” Ever.

Desperate to get away from her oppressive friends, Sadie crashes into Hayden at a bonfire and the attraction that sparks between them is nothing short of electric. But Hayden’s an outsider and when things heat up, Sadie will be forced to choose between her friends and her new boyfriend.

Only Queen Bee Britt isn’t having it. She will not allow Sadie to cross her. Sadie can either do what Britt wants her to do or she will reveal Sadie for the PTSD freak that she is.

Sadie does some soul searching about who she is and who she wants to be. She can’t live her life like this. Not any more. One fateful night will help her see how much things have to change.

She’s determined to no longer allow the AE to rule her life. She will be strong, stand up for Ian and love who she wants in Hayden. Determined and invigorated, Sadie goes to school feeling hopeful for the first time in forever.

But, the unthinkable happens.

Shooters attack dozens of students before the two eventually take their own lives, leaving the school a decimated shadow of what it once was.

Suddenly who lives where, wears what or loves whom seems like the least of Lexington Parish’s problems as everyone and everything changes forever in the after.

IN THE AFTER by Elisa Dane is a hard-hitting and heart-warming story of tragedy, love, loss and redemption. It is recommended for readers 14+.

Hey Amy! Welcome.

So, we asked Amy … Can you describe your writing process, and whether you are you a plotter or a panster, how did that process help or hurt as you wrote/write a sequel or trilogy, what did you enjoy most, and what was the hardest part of writing Nobody’s Lady, what do you hope readers come away with after ready this series.

Here’s Amy’s reply ~

When I wrote the first draft of Nobody’s Goddess, I was a total pantser. I was a pantser for the mess I worked on for nine years before that as well (now shelved, although parts of it inspired Nobody’s Goddess).  I wrote the first draft of Nobody’s Goddess in just nine days! However, it went through many, many, many revisions after that before publication, so the work was far from over.

When I was offered representation by my former agent, we discussed the idea of making the book a series and he asked me to write outlines for books two and three so he could show them to any editors who were interested in the first book. This was the first time I wrote outlines for any of my projects, and I was surprised to find it wasn’t impossible or even limiting. After a brainstorming session, the plot just flowed out of me and I went ahead and wrote the first three chapters—and then had to put it all aside for a year and a half before I got an offer and the go-ahead from my publisher to write them.

Meanwhile, I tried writing one more manuscript without outlining and I got stuck at the end—so stuck I shelved it. I remembered how I liked outlining (although I’d yet to use an outline to write a manuscript) and vowed to always outline from then on. I allow myself to go off outline when I come up with something better on the fly, but at least I always have that basic framework in place to fall back on. (It’s not foolproof, though. The second time I attempted that aforementioned shelved manuscript even with an outline, I still got stuck and shelved the second version. I don’t know if I’ll ever get that story written.)

When it was time to write the second and third books in The Never Veil Series, the outlines were immensely helpful. Before then, I had only a vague idea of how to sustain an entire series, but with the outline, I knew how to build to each climax and plant the seeds for the overall themes and issues. However, the hardest part of writing Nobody’s Lady was trying to inject some life into the middle book. (It also took me the longest to draft out of any of the books in the series—nine days for book one, a month and a half for book three, and four months for book two, the shortest in the series!) The first book introduced the world and the conflict and I was really looking forward to writing the third book and resolving everything, but the second book still had to stand on its own. Luckily, I had a theme to focus on: the characters adapting to the huge change that occurred in their village at the end of the first book. I also enjoyed discovering who certain characters really were, as this book was the first time they could truly be themselves. (I was surprised they weren’t as nice and easygoing as I originally wrote them when they were under the control of magic!) I hope readers come away with a new perspective on the first book and ask themselves if the “happy” relationships were really happy, considering the men in the village were forced to fall in love. By the end of the series, I hope they’ve thought about gender roles and what it means to love someone on equal footing.

That’s awesome, thank you so much for your insights and for being here today. 🙂

Blurb:

For the first time in a thousand years, the men in Noll’s village possess the freedom to love whom they will. In order to give each man the chance to fully explore his feelings, the lord of the village decrees all marriages null and void until both spouses declare their love for one another and their desire to wed again. What many women think will be a simple matter becomes a source of village-wide tension as most men decide to leave their families and responsibilities behind.

Rejected by the lord and ashamed of her part in the village’s history, Noll withdraws from her family and lives life as an independent woodcarver. This changes when her sister accuses her of hiding her former husband Jurij from her—and when Jurij eventually does ask to move in. Determined not to make the same mistakes, Noll decides to support her male friends through their new emotional experiences, but she’s soon caught up in a darker plot than she ever dared imagine possible from the men she thought she knew so well. And the lord for whom she still has feelings may be hiding the most frightening truth of them all.

Nobody's Goddess (Never Veil #1)

Blurb:

In a village of masked men, magic compels each man to love only one woman and to follow the commands of his “goddess” without question. A woman may reject the only man who will love her if she pleases, but she will be alone forever. And a man must stay masked until his goddess returns his love—and if she can’t or won’t, he remains masked forever.

Seventeen-year-old Noll isn’t in the mood to celebrate. Her childhood friends have paired off and her closest companion, Jurij, found his goddess in Noll’s own sister. Desperate to find a way to break this ancient spell, Noll instead discovers why no man has ever chosen her.

Thus begins a dangerous game between the choice of woman versus the magic of man. And the stakes are no less than freedom and happiness, life and death—and neither is willing to lose.
