Description

For years, Ian Sands has enjoyed his life as a bachelor, taking advantage of singlehood and exploring his own definition of passion—whoever she may be. Blonde. Brunette. Tall. Short. Hot. Not. Five months ago, all that changed.
Ian’s been celibate, frustrated and desperately seeking answers to why one woman, who doesn’t play by girls’ rules, haunts his every waking moment.
As a renovations specialist, Taylor Marsh lives, works and breathes construction—a profession her southern belle of a mother would rather Taylor not touch. The same goes for Ian; Mama Marsh would never approve of him.
Like Ian, though, each time he and Taylor draw near, something compels her to get closer.
Something else tells her to run away.
Fast.
As much as their histories suggest they shouldn’t be together, neither Taylor nor Ian can deny the pull, and the two succumb, indulging in a relationship that brings pleasure to body, mind and soul.
Doing so, though, also ushers in a series of events both should have foreseen as well as one final outcome neither expected.

Excerpt

The sledge hammer circled through the air, whipping around Taylor Marsh’s head. Wood splintered. Fragmented pieces shot off like shrapnel.
With another heave, she drew the tool over her shoulder, and with one step, swung with every bit of force she could muster.
Decades-old siding crumpled under her attack of the shed.
A deep breath and a growl preceded the stretch of her arms and the twist of her body as she propelled herself forward again.
The weighted head hit first, yanking the tool from her sweaty palms and throwing Taylor sideways. On an ‘oomph’, her chest, arms and cheek kissed the red clay of southern North Carolina soil.
Taylor pushed up to her elbows, twisted toward the old shed she’d vowed to tear down and sighed. She sat, ran a hand through her failing hair, where blonde streaks had turned brown, and resecured the tail at the nape of her neck as sweat dripped from her brow.
Despite its age, several of the shed’s planks remained standing—a testament to construction of years gone by.
“One old building to go, and it wants to stay upright longer than the Titanic.”
Beyond the mess, her home stood—a white, clapboard bungalow she’d renovated herself.
“Okay. One more time.” With the sun high in the sky and bearing down upon her with the force of the coming summer, she stood. “It’s no bigger than a kid’s play house. This shouldn’t be so hard.”
Taylor positioned her feet at the front corner, spreading them to give herself a wide base. “Right. One hit to the figurative solar plexus.” She nodded as if the pile would respond. The crunch of a car’s wheels on gravel made her turn. She faced the Jaguar as it rolled to a stop.
Two very recognizable men stepped from within the vehicle. Their long strides spoke of power and confidence, the smiles suggested warmth, and the punch one gave the other—playfulness.
Taylor brushed off grime from her jeans, tapped her boots against the ground and wiped a hand across her brow. “Like that’s going to help.” Giving up on her attire, she headed toward them, leaving her pile of work for later. “Hey, Tripp.” She took his extended hand, gazing again at the tattoo on his neck she’d found so intriguing the first time they met. “Ian.” Taylor switched her hand-held welcome toward the man who did more to her libido than anyone she’d ever met.
He held up his hands, palms out, bejeweled right ring finger glinting in the sun.
“Afraid of a little dirt?” She let her true southern come out, even added a bit to the tone as she spun the only ring she owned around her fourth finger—nothing like the ostentatious, gaudy, show-offy thing Ian wore.
“No. But you’re a … more … I got a flight to New York in an hour,” Ian said.
Tripp chuckled. “Why don’t you have a crew come knock that thing down?”
Taylor glanced back at the small shed. “What fun would that be?”

About the Author:

Aimee is a romantic at heart and a southern transplant with a bit of the accent (but not a whole bunch). She’s married to her high school sweetheart, and with him, she’s produced three native North Carolinians, two of whom share the same DNA.

With an MBA and a degree in Applied Mathematics, there’s absolutely no reason she should be writing romance novels. Then again, she shouldn’t need a calculator to add two numbers, either … but she does.

*Note: This is an adult paranormal romance.

Sounds like a great read, doesn’t it? I love all things mythological!!!

$100 Book Blast – Sprung by Kelbian Noel – April 5th

Sprung (Book 2 of the Witchbound Series):

Since she discovered magic, seventeen-year-old Skye Jackson’s life is almost perfect. Almost. Even perfect has its glitches.

What happens when the one with all the power makes the biggest mistakes? Welcome to my life.

Four months ago, I couldn’t have been happier. When my parents got divorced, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. Especially when Mom married a guy half her age. But then I found out I wasn’t the average Joana. Discovering magic existed and, best of all, I could use it, made everything easier to deal with. That is until I got a little too spell happy. But what girl wouldn’t defend her best friend against a world-class creep? Now I’m stuck in a nightmare, forced to make life and death decisions I never dreamed I’d face.

Love the magic, hate the responsibility.

Book Trailer

Roots

Seventeen-year-old Baltimore Land just wants to be normal, but magic has other plans.
I don’t consider myself a witch, that’s my parents’ thing. I’ve never really believed in magic either. Sure, I tried it a few times. Fell for the whole “magic happens” thing. But it didn’t happen to me. No amount of rhyming stopped my parents from moving me halfway across the country. Not one spell stopped me from being labeled the town freak.
And worst of all, no matter how many times I begged the Universe to bring my twin back, I was ignored. Until now.
He’s back all right. And in a magical bind of his own. Not the magic-won’t-work-for-me kind either. In fact, it’s working a little too well. Too dark. Too deep.
It turns out our entire family’s magical roots run just as deep and my brother didn’t end up where he is by accident. So I’m going to help him. But magic isn’t really on my side. Nope. Once I finally get the craft under control, I’m expected to abandon the one person in the world who’s closest to me, just to save myself

Blue Hearts of Mars Book Blast Giveaway!

Blue Hearts of Mars by Nicole Grotepas

Retta Heikkinen knows the unspoken rule of society: love between androids and humans is forbidden. A simple enough edict until Hemingway Koskinen spends an evening charming her with his intense gaze, bewitching smile, and sparkling conversation that hints at so much more than the usual obsessions of high school boys. Rules were meant to be cast aside, especially when love beckons.

If only it were as simple as being in love.

Trouble is brewing, not just for Hemingway–for all androids. Secrets have been kept, lies propagated, and Retta soon discovers that a frightening future awaits thousands of androids if she doesn’t do something to stop it. Worse yet, she will lose the one love she’s ever endangered herself for: Hemingway.

Praise

“Nothing like I’ve read before. A true original story! Everything is so well described. Now if they could make a follow up book and movie, that would be great!” ~Mrs. Z (Amazon)

“I was addicted to this book from the beginning. Life on Mars was very real and not at all a sci fi world I didn’t understand . . . I found myself rooting for Retta and Hemingway from the very beginning. Easy reading, couldn’t put it down and had it read in a weekend. Waiting for a sequel!” ~TNielsen (Amazon)

“The ending of this book is exceptional. While it was different from what I imagined, the way the author brought in a shocking revelation was amazing. I probably reread the last chapter 3 times letting it sink in and the meaning behind it. It was truly beautiful . . . I would love to see more of Retta and Hemingway!” ~Kat Meyer, (Goodreads)

“I love how the author populated Mars . . . so descriptive and comprehensive . . . I could clearly picture everything as if I was seeing the movie &/or was along for the ride. . . . Retta, the main character, is strong, opinionated, and a great champion for her cause.” ~Megan (Amazon)

“I had been in the worst reading slump ever and came across this on Goodreads and thought I’d give it a try. Well, I was pleasantly surprised on how funny and exciting and mysterious it was . . . Mei, Retta’s bff, had me laughing out loud quite a bit as well as Retta herself. I’d definitely hang out with those two.” ~Deanneluvbooks (Goodreads)

Excerpt

“I’m pretty sure he’s an android.” I made the decision in a split second. She should know. Maybe she’d change her tune.

“No way, no. Nuh uh! Him? It’s always the best-looking ones, isn’t it?” She sat back and slapped the table. Her brown, nearly black eyes flashed and she flipped her silky dark hair back and shook her head over and over. She was quite mad about it. Evidently.

“But he’s still gorgeous, right?” I prodded. Across the cafeteria, someone approached Hemingway and began talking to him. I felt a hot knife of jealousy all but slip between my ribs. I couldn’t see who it was. Their back was to me and the crowds thickened right when it happened. I saw him look up at whoever it was. He smiled and I felt my insides respond in a great knotting that made me stop eating completely. I sighed.

“Of course! Sure,” Mei said, but I could hear the doubt in her voice. “I mean, blue heart or man. Gorgeous is gorgeous. No doubt about it.”

I sighed again. “Well, I’m still going to be his friend, if he’s interested. That’s not weird, right?”

“Not at all! It’s not like we live in a bubble. I mean, we do, but we have to mingle with them. So, yeah, why not?”

“Do you ever wonder how many people are androids? It’s like, we only know of a few. But maybe there are more. Maybe we can’t tell with all of them.” I pushed my tray away and slumped onto my hand, propping my elbow on the table. Hemingway was getting up and leaving with whoever it was. As he walked out, I kept trying to get a glimpse of the person escorting him from the cafeteria. It was too far and the crowds were irritatingly heavy. I only saw him for a moment, but there was something in his face. Like frustration. Consternation. Or fear.

“No, why the crap would I wonder? We know who they are. Most of them. I mean, it’s not like I pay intense attention to who’s a blue heart and who’s not. Why would I?”

Back Cover

When a series of unusual murders point to Lou Hudson, Ironhill’s equal rights advocate, as the primary suspect, she has but one choice: find the real perpetrator before her trial begins or face execution.

Lou, the last of the Jinn, survives by hiding her abilities after the rest of the elementals fell victim to genocide when they were deemed too powerful to exist. As a preternatural pest exterminator and self-proclaimed guardian of the innocent, she’s accustomed to trudging through the dregs of society. Hunting down a pesky murderer should be easy, especially with help from the dashing and mischievous local media darling. For Lou, though, nothing is ever simple. When she discovers the killer’s identity, to reveal it would unearth her secret and go against her strict moral code, resulting in a deadly catch twenty-two.

Jocelyn Adams grew up on a cattle farm in Lakefield and has remained a resident of Southern Ontario her entire life, most recently in Muskoka. She has worked as a computer geek, a stable hand, a secretary, and spent most of her childhood buried up to the waist in an old car or tractor engine with her mechanically inclined dad. But mostly, she’s a dreamer with a vivid imagination and a love for dark fantasy (and a closet romantic — shhh!). When she isn’t shooting her compound bow in competition or writing, she hangs out with her husband and young daughter at their little house in the woods.

Back of the Book

Escape.

That should be Hyla’s first thought as her people are chained and imprisoned for no imaginable reason.

Instead, Hyla finds herself traveling through a land void of Natives, with human soldiers pillaging in desperate pursuit of her, and in search of the mystical Pool of Souls—home to the one man who can save her people.

Or so she believes.

Led by her faith in the deity Fadir, Hyla is met along her journey by Jadon—a human male and fierce King’s warrior, and his childhood best friend Conlin—one of the few Natives aware of his Fadir-given Talents.

Protected by Jadon, guided by Conlin, and with an unfailing belief in the purpose of her pilgrimage, Hyla carries on.

Like her, though, another searches for the Pool, and should he gain access first, everyone she loves, and everything she knows, could be lost.

Forever.

Awesome, right?

Author bio:

After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.

A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

Description

Normal people don’t believe their nightmares stalk them. They don’t fall in love with boys who don’t exist, either.
Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.
Or is that all in her head?
Layla doesn’t know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.
No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?
The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.
In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal  of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.
Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?
The answer may never be far enough … away.

Doesn’t it look great? How do you like the cover? What do you think of the story premise? I know I want to read it, how about you?

Make Believe anthology (part six) : an interview with Kelly Said

The cover:

Pretty right?

The author:

Kelly loves life in the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. When she’s not reading, being doted on by Mr. S, or pressed for attention by the wet nose of her beefy bull terrier, she can be found huddled over her little laptop writing whatever catches her fancy — mostly Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror stories for Young Adults.

Kelly Said will now take your questions …

Hi Julie! Thank you so much for inviting me to appear on your blog, I’m so excited to be here! 😀

Q. Great to have you. Tell us about your story!

PETRIFIED is about how a mysterious storm has replaced summer with winter, devastating crops and smothering Castle lands in snow. Prince Sterling August stands alone as a leader, lost in personal grief as well as a desire to help his people, but with an inability to do either. The answers he needs await him, but without Lochlyn, a woman who’s just as isolated as Sterling, he’ll never see what stands before him, cloaked in illusion.

Q. How did you come up with the idea?

The cover for Make Believe was the prompt for each story, so I studied the image very carefully and just let my mind wander to all the possible reasons why a girl would be out in the middle of a snow coated field. I figured she had some deep connection to nature, to be able to withstand the cold wearing only a cape over her bare arms. Then, once I figured out who lived in that “castle” in the background, the rest of the story just unfolded, leaving my fingers to keep up typing with the speed of my thoughts, hehe! 🙂

Q. What’s your main character’s greatest strength, biggest flaw?

I think Sterling’s greatest strength is his loyalty to friends and family and his biggest flaw is that he probably overthinks things (like me, shh! hehe!)

Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part of writing for me is getting past the first draft phase, allowing myself to suck for sake of getting the story out, hehe!
Q. What one question do you wish an interviewer would ask you but never has?

Whew! I’m not sure about this one, I’ve been asked so many great questions, things I never thought to ponder on before.

Q. What are you working on now? Do you tend to work on multiple projects or one at a time?

I’m working on revisions for my 2012 National Novel Writing Month novel, as well as writing a short story with a deadline for submission in March — however, I’d like to get that subbed earlier than the deadline, just so I can find out a “yes or no” sooner rather than later, hehe! 🙂

Q. What is your favorite line from this book (short story)?

Holding tight to her satchel and Tash, Lochlyn stepped through the portal, into the bitter winds of strange winter, with only the the memory of summer’s warmth on her back.

Q. Did you always want to be a writer?

I’ve always been a writer, but not one who necessarily shared her stories, hehe! Not until I got older did I find the bravery to actually put myself out there and let someone read what I wrote. It takes a lot of courage to be willing to subject yourself to rejection and criticism, but the readers who enjoy what I write make it so worthwhile. 🙂

Q. Was there any part that you struggled with or avoided writing?

The scenes with Estes and Lochlyn were especially difficult to write, I had just lost my precious little pookie dog and was dealing with trying to write a final farewell scene, and, well, it was just super emotionally sad to for me to sit and write it.

Q. What are you reading right now? Do you read a book at a time or more than one?

I do read more than one book at a time, usually in different genres. Currently I’m wrapping up a beta read on a fantastic YA Dystopian novel, I just finished reading YA contemporary novella, TWIN SENSE by Lydia Sharp, and I’m looking forward to diving in to THE DIVINERS by Libba Bray and PAPER VALENTINE by Brenna Yovanoff.

Q. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Any hobbies?

I like to draw (my bachelor’s degree is in drawing 😉 ), I also knit and crochet and do my best to make my husband laugh with daily shenanigans, hehe!
Q. What was your favorite book/who was your favorite writer as a teen?

My favorite book as a teen was THE OUTSIDERS by S.E. Hinton.

Q. Who is your favorite writer now?

omgosh, picking a favorite author now is an absolute impossibility! I love all the books! hehehe! 🙂
Q, What is the best young adult book you’ve read so far in 2012?

Shadow and Bone by L. Bardugo took me pleasantly by surprise, I checked it out from the library and am wanting to buy it for my shelf now. 🙂
Q. What do you see emerging as the next big trend in young adult literature?

Seeing as I’m still wearing shoes from high school, I’m probably the worst person to ask about trends of any sort. I hope that good writing and good storytelling stay trendy forever.
Q. Have you ever wanted to quit writing? Why? What made you keep going?

I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to quit writing, I mean, I’m too excited by the prospect of seeing something that was once just a thought in my head become real, that’s what keeps me coming back to my characters and their worlds, every day.

Q. If you could have a career besides being an author, what would it be?

I think being a racehorse jockey would be cool, I definitely have the height advantage for it, hehe! 🙂

Thank you again for being such a wonderful hostess, I can’t wait to see what YOU are working on next! 😀

Aw, thanks Kelly. We have so much in common. We both love to write and draw, and the books on your list to read are on mine, too. How cool is that?
