Disappointment has been on speed dial in Ellen Grayson’s life lately. Her dad died, her mom numbs the grief with drugs and alcohol, and her so-called friends have slowly abandoned her.

Trusting a popular teacher with her troubles should have been safe and should NOT have led to an unwelcome seduction attempt that made her desperate to escape the final moments of Junior year. Lesson learned. Best to keep all the sordid details to herself and trust no one.

Enter Rex Jacobi, a cocky boy, recently transplanted from New York City and fellow summer camp employee. Though his quick wit and confidence draws her in, she can’t let him get too close. And summer is just long enough and hot enough to keep a boy like that at arm’s length.

But by the time Rex’s charm wears down her resistance, it’s too late. He’s put Ellen on the “just friends” shelf and has shifted his romantic attentions to the impossibly annoying and perky anti-Ellen. Even worse, the teacher who tried to get her to sleep with him is still at it, preying on other girls while Ellen struggles to come to terms with what happened.

With her ability to trust as shaky as a chastity vow on prom night, Ellen must decide if she has enough remaining courage to speak up about the well-liked teacher and risk retribution, tell Rex how she really feels about him and risk heartbreak, or hold all her secrets inside. After all, it’s the only safe place she knows when the only thing louder than words is the fear of being rejected.

About-the-Author

Iris St. Claire

Iris St. Clair is the pen name for a long-suffering cubicle worker by day, a Walter Mitty-like dreamer by night. (Her alter ego Tatiana Ivanadance also choreographs gravity-defying routines in those fantasies, but that’s another bio.)
No matter what genre she writes, she prefers witty, insecure heroines and kind, persistent heroes able to break through to the gooey heart inside.
In high school she was voted most likely to win at Monopoly and Clue, but least likely to throw a ball anywhere near a target. Thank goodness writing requires less hand-eye coordination, punctuation errors notwithstanding.
Iris believes in the two-year “fish or cut bait” dating rule and has a 20+ year marriage and two teenaged sons as proof of concept. She lives, writes, dreams and dances in the rainy Portland, OR area.

Guest post and Giveaway: Louder Than Words by Iris St. Clair @Iris_St_Clair @SwoonRomance

Hey everyone! I have a special treat for you.

The lovely and talented Iris St. Clair has agreed to take over the blog today.

She’s promoting her new book, Louder Than Words.

I love this story,  and if you haven’t read it yet, all I can say is DO EEET!!!

Do it now. *Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200 (*Monopoly silliness)

And so without further fanfare and ridiculousness … I give you, Ms. St. Clair!

***

I have high school aged kids. When my oldest was an entering Freshman, one of his teachers was arrested:

The news definitely affected me:

I needed to do something.

I empathized with the girl, who was never named. I mean, look at this guy. Really? And he was married with three children. He also went to jail for a few months.

There’s a law that raises the age of consent between authority figures and minors for a reason. She was just a girl. Maybe one with her own issues who was searching in the wrong places.

And digging herself in deeper.

That got me wondering more and more about the girl. What was her story? Why was she susceptible to this older man, her teacher?

Maybe she had issues with her parents … neglect …  or death …

 Drugs … ?

I wanted to give her hope. I wanted to give her romance and love.

But it couldn’t come too easy.

She’d have to work for what she wanted, overcome her fears and doubts.

Without giving too much away, there is a happy ending!

But…

I would definitely recommend you read the book to really experience all the feels. Pictures are cute and nice, but I’ll bet your marvelous reader’s brain can do a much, much better job.

Louder Than Words Excerpt  — “First Aid Burlesque”

He glares as Rex passes. My brother is on the large size—about six feet and built like a football player, though he played with drums, and not pigskins, on the football field. He’s usually so mellow people no longer notice his size after five minutes of meeting him. Since becoming my guardian, however, he’s taken his role a bit too seriously. He’s not averse to using physical intimidation to scare off any males who try to get too close to me. For the most part, I’ve been grateful for it. At least he cares.

Rex doesn’t show the usual signs of nervousness at my brother’s intimidation attempts. Best to whisk him outside as quickly as possible, which I do.

“Sorry about my brother.”

“Wow, yeah. I suppose it probably did look suspicious from all sorts of angles—your face, the two of us crammed into your little bathroom, my hands all over you.” He smirks and doesn’t seem the least bit perturbed.

“Your hands were not all over me.”

“I was putting on the Band-Aid. They were there.”

His exaggerated insistence about something that wasn’t borders ludicrous. “You’re so weird, Rex Jacobi. Most boys would be swearing up and down that nothing happened, over-compensating even. But you … ” I shake my head. “You know my brother could throw you against the wall hard enough to make you stick, right?”

“You think your brother would do something like that?”

He’s got me there. “Well … no.”

“Didn’t think so.”

“You don’t have to look so smug about it.” I point to the street. “Okay, so I guess you better go then. Don’t want you to be late for your date.” I give him a slug in the arm and hope it’s light enough to convey no more than minor annoyance, boredom, or gentle teasing.

He nods. “Yeah, sure.”

For a second I think he’s going to say something else because his mouth drops open and he draws in a breath. The moment passes and he trots down the apartment building stairs, doesn’t even glance back over his shoulder.

The look on my brother’s face, on the other hand, is both infuriating and heart-breaking. Infuriating he thinks I’d act like such a ho, and heart-breaking because absolutely nothing happened to even give Robbie a moment’s worry about my chastity.

My Writing Process – Blog Tour

 Picture

Today is Blog Tour Day!

This  tour is where writers and authors answer questions about their writing process.

My friend Juliette Cross posted hers last week.  She’s writing a full length novel set in her fantastical Morgon world.

Picture

You can check out her writing process here: http://juliettecross.weebly.com/blog.html

She’s kind of awesome.

JULIETTE is a southern writer with a love of sensual settings, snarky heroines, and dangerous men. Her NA urban fantasy romance debut begins with the Nightwing Novellas. SOULFIRE jump-starts this series as a loose retelling of Romeo and Juliet, except with a happily-ever-after, half-dragon men, and steamy sex. Publishing details are coming soon! If you’d like to find out more, you can follow Juliette here:

Okay, ya’ll, let’s talk about this writing gig…

What am I working on?

Hmm, many things, my precious.  Last November, I finished a modern gothic romance and was lucky enough to get super amazing agent Brittany Booker to represent that work! Woot! Currently, I am working on my first young adult contemporary based on a fairy tale retelling.  I also have an idea for another southern gothic, a dystopian, and … yeah. You can see the problem …

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Good question. It’s hard to be objective about your own work. First off, I’ll tell you that I’m mad as a hatter, so my special brand of insanity tends to bleed into my stories, but really, I like to take traditional or classic ideas and twist them into something completely new.

Why do I write what I do?

I loved fairly tales as a child and my parents read everything to me, including poetry and classics. I don’t think I ever grew out of a love for the fantastic. Also, I am an incurable romantic, so young adult is a perfect fit for me. I love the idea of birth, and beginnings, and seeing things with fresh eyes. Since teens are experiencing everything for the first time, I relive those exciting moments over and over with every new hero and heroine I meet. Reading their stories is a welcome escape that keeps me dreaming and daring to hope.

How does your writing process work?

Funny you ask. I’m in flux. I used to be a  total pantser, planning nothing. Now, I have started making rough outlines that I find help avoid those pesky plot holes later.

Monday through Friday, I write on and off throughout the day as I have time. Creativity comes in waves (I loathe the four am wave) so some days I write more than others. I have attention deficit disorder and dyslexia which means I take a lot of unplanned breaks. Ha! Weekends I spend with my family.

The creative portion of my work takes me anywhere from four to six months, (closer to six) and I tend to edit as I go. Actually, every three or four chapters, I go back and read through for continuity, pace and flow. I swear I’ve almost memorized my dang novel by the time I’m done. Then the suckers go off to a lovely band of betas worth their weight in gold. (I would buy them all new cars if I could afford it) They shred the work, send it back, and I edit some more.

Not too scientific, but there you have it.  🙂

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post!!

You can check out the writing process of my amazing writerly type friend: Iris St. Clair www.irisstclair.com , Monday, March 17th! She’s got a new book coming out soon that is completely amazing!

… And …

So excited!

Here’s something huge I want to share with you:

Happy Book Birthday!!

Darkside_Sun_Final

Release Date:  March 11, 2014

Publisher: Entangled Publishing – Embrace Imprint

Genre: New Adult, PNR, Sci-Fi, Humor

Whoo hoo! Jocelyn has outdone herself with this one! Here’s the blurb …

Addison Beckett tries hard to pretend she’s normal, but she’s far from it. Since she was six years old, she’s seen the world around her unraveling, as if someone is pulling a thread from a sweater and it’s all slowly coming undone. When she ignores it, it goes away, so that’s what she does.

Enter her arrogant-but-hot professor Asher Green. He knows all about her special brand of crazy. In fact, he might be just as nuts as she is. Asher insists that the dead from a parallel dimension are trying to possess the living in this one. And since Addison seems to be the only one who can see these “wraiths,” she just might be the key to saving the world.

Addison wants nothing to do with Asher or his secret society, The Mortal Machine. But as their animosity grows, she finds it harder and harder to ignore the chemistry between them. And when she discovers that Machine laws forbid her from touching him, she realizes that’s all she wants to do.

Stop the wraiths. Break the rules. Save the world. All in a day’s work.

Normal was overrated, anyway.
