Cover Reveal: ONE MORE DAY

 Hey guys!

J. Taylor Publishing releases their next short story anthology, One More Day. Can’t wait. This one is going to be so awesome!

.

And here it is! Gorgeous, right?

One More Day

One More Day

What if today never ends?

What if everything about life — everything anyone hoped to be, to do, to experience — never happens?

Whether sitting in a chair, driving down the road, in surgery, jumping off a cliff or flying … that’s where you’d be … forever.

Unless …

In One More Day, Erika Beebe, Marissa Halvorson, Kimberly Kay, J. Keller Ford, Danielle E. Shipley and Anna Simpson join L.S. Murphy to give us their twists, surprising us with answers to two big questions, all from the perspective of characters under the age of eighteen.

How do we restart time?

How do we make everything go back to normal?

The answers, in whatever the world — human, alien, medieval, fantasy or fairytale — could, maybe, happen today.

Right now.

What would you do if this happened … to you?

The Writer’s Voice entry: The Seer

Hi guys! Guess what? I made it through the Rafflecopter round of The Writer’s Voice Contest. A rather large thank you goes to the organizers: Monica Bustamante Wagner of Love YA, Krista Van Dolzer of Mother. Write. (Repeat.), Cupid of Cupid’s Literary Connection, and Brenda Drake of Brenda Drake Writes.  So now it’s time to post my query and first 250 words of my manuscript: YA historical with magic. Boo-ya!

Query:

Every woman in the Tesmond family line inherits prophetic abilities they must keep secret. Seventeen-year-old Carlotta yearns for the freedom to use her gift, but in the tiny hamlet of Greer, seers are met with swift trials and a hangman’s rope.

When Count Durante’s handsome son Hector discovers her hidden talent, he sails for Greer and kidnaps Carlotta, planning to use her visions to end the war in his homeland of Melita. Despite her formidable abilities, Hector somehow foils every attempt she makes at escape, always—maddeningly—one step ahead. She’s never met a boy she despised more and still dreamt of kissing.

As pirates pursue them, complicating the journey to Melita, Carlotta struggles with a new prophesy, one directing her to assist in the war effort, instead of finding a way home. Risking deadly consequences, her heart knows only one path—the one leading toward Hector, the boy haunting her dreams.

THE SEER is a YA historical with magic complete at 90,000 words.

My YA urban fantasy novel CRUX was published July, 2012 with J Taylor Publishing.

Below please find the first 250 words of the manuscript per contest rules.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Julie Reece

***

First 250 words:

Carlotta tensed, bound by her curse. A yellow mist enveloped her mind, wrapping it like the silken threads of a cocoon. She always resisted—at first.

Her fingers buried themselves in the hair at her pulsing temples. She winced as she pressed too hard upon the fresh bruise caused by a flying rock. Thrown by a pack of Greer children, tainted by their parents’ prejudices concerning the local ‘witches’, their missile had found its mark yet again.

Fighting her curse was useless, so she lowered her hands, and opened her consciousness, preparing for what the vision would reveal.

The mist cleared, yet she could not see.

She sensed a man in the dark space, shrouded in secrecy. Drawing her to him, his powerful lifeforce ensnared her.

“You will help us.”

“You might have asked,” she answered without knowing why.

“Does one need ask for what is already theirs?”

You are a bold one. “In this case, and as you need my help, yes.”

“Then I yield and make my request a formal one. Will you aid us?”

The cry of thousands swelled within her breast, crushing the air from her lungs. The dark man’s pain rose distinct above theirs to grip her heart, binding her to him.

“You want me to free them?” Her voice trembled. “I don’t know how.”

“You will … and incur both reward and loss.”

 A cost? There always is.

“Your answer, Milady?”

“You have my word.”

“Look you then to the seas …”

Fields of Elysium by A.B. Whelan

How can love mend a heart full of hate?

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly’s life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful, romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, unimaginable danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

Excerpt

(Chapter 8)

“Don’t worry, it won’t hurt at all.” His voice was a gentle breeze, his breath warm and delicious. I licked my lips from an automatic reflex. It must have been a reflex because I’d never do such a thing on purpose. To kiss a boy had never been so alluring to me as it was at that moment. As a matter of fact, kissing a guy held no allure for me before. None whatsoever.

His finger touched my forehead. He was right about the pain; there was none, only a little sensitivity.

Slowly I closed my eyes while my lips parted. I could sense my body leaning toward Victor, as if my common sense was unable to withstand this physical attraction.

Every nerve under my skin surrendered to the touch of his finger and transmitted an impulse of intense yearning to my heart, almost killing me in the process.

My eyes sprang open to see Victor’s longing gaze. All I wanted at that moment was to tell him how I felt. Yet I couldn’t. The words didn’t seem to form in my mouth.

But a little warning voice was also knocking on my head, “You don’t even know him, you crazy fool.”

I tried not to listen, but that split second of hesitation destroyed my chance to kiss him.

Crossroads

A Demos City Novel by Jonathan Lister

Release Date: November 4, 2013

Target Reader: Adult, Thriller/SuspenseWerewolf

Back of the Book

Werewolf. Bar bouncer. Dad. Standard traits for any self-respecting, reformed criminal, living under the radar in Demos City. For Leon Gray, normal is what he wants—for himself and his not-yet-changed teenage daughter.

Playing bodyguard to crusading reporter David Hastings would totally ruin Leon’s peace, especially since Hastings has hired killers on his trail, pros who know how he takes his espresso in the morning, and where Leon lives.

The payoff, though, would fill up Shauna’s empty college fund, and in a battle between opportunity and ordinary, money wins. He just has to keep Hastings alive long enough to cash the check.

If only he didn’t have to save his daughter, too.

As a budding wolf, she’s piqued the interest of a local pack Alpha—one Leon knows will steal Shauna right out from under him the first chance he gets.

Leon isn’t about to give up on his daughter or Hastings, and will fight for both longer than it took Demos City to see werewolves as equals to humans.

He can only hope it doesn’t take a thousand years.

All in all, Hunted is a very enjoyable read, especially for those who enjoy angel/demon books. This one has everything you want in an angel book while still maintaining its own distinct feel.

This series is addictive.

AMAZING! There is not enough words to describe how much I loved Hunted. Ednah Walters has outdid herself if that is even possible.

Author Ednah Walters

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries, hence Stratemeyer influence, before I graduated to Mills & Boons (starting with Janet Daily’s Shutter the Sky) and the rest is history.

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and wondrous adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn’t enough. So I started to write.

I’ve written picture books, contemporary and romantic suspense, biracial/multicultural books, and finally YA fantasy. Awakened is the first book in The Guardian Legacy series. I’m working on book 2, tentatively named Betrayed. When I’m not writing, I do things with my family, five children or my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in Utah, the setting for my series.

Excerpt:

The clang of metal hitting metal pierced the air and mixed with screams, hisses, and screeches. Thuds shook the ground, each like a slap at my psyche.

I tried to move and search for the sources of these sounds, but my body stayed frozen. My arms and mind were at odds too. I tried to reach for my dagger with little result. Frustration roiled through me. My toes curled and sank in the sand, the only proof that I was standing at the beach, that all of this was real. My eyes moved too, thank goodness.

Still, I couldn’t tell where I was or whether the others were with me or not. The shadows pressed heavy on my senses. After months of drawing strength from energies around me, I was being sucked into a hole where nothing existed. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t see a single energy. My fear of darkness returned.

I closed my eyes, resorting to my old way of sensing things. Nothing.

Sighing, I opened my eyes and searched through the darkness for hope, anything. I opened my mouth to call to the others, but either the din swallowed the sound or I couldn’t produce any. Maybe I didn’t even open my mouth.

A movement appeared from the corner of my eyes then something shiny reflected light as it sliced the air. More appeared, the sound of metal against metal growing louder. Squinting, I studied them and realization dawned. There were weapons, swords and daggers thrusting and slicing. A battle raged around me and all I could do was watch, helpless and confused.

Bran? Remy? Sykes? Izzy? Kim? What’s going on? Can you guys hear me?

Once again, my telepathic questions went unanswered. I squinted, trying to see if my friends were among the fighters, but I couldn’t see faces, just silhouettes against a starless sky. Who’s out there? Where am I?

My senses threatened to explode from the echoes of pain and death. Bodies fell from the sky. Something sticky dripped on my arms, my head and face. Blood. Even in the darkness, I knew it. I smelled it. Swallowing, I tried to move again. Somebody help me, I screamed.

Tiny flakes fluttered down from the sky and fell on my head and on top of the bodies on the ground. No, not snowflakes. Feathers. Downy ones and larger ones, like the ones covering Bran’s wings. Guardians were being slaughtered.

Bran? Remy? I called to them again and again, but it was useless.

They are here and you must stop them, a woman’s voice, faint but sweet, broke through the murkiness. With it came light so brilliant I closed my eyes against the glare.

Who? I asked, opening my eyelids and squinting.

The Tribe…. The deafening resonance swallowed the rest of her words, yet I still couldn’t see anything, not the source of the voice or the light.

Tribe? What tribe?

Faint words followed. I strained to hear her with little success. Then her voice grew audible. Fight back or they’ll win again. There was a familiar lilt to it, yet I couldn’t place it. Don’t make my sacrifices be for nothing.

The screams, now jarring chords like a choir singing out of sync, rose again. More dead wingless bodies floated to the ground, arms flailing, the thud as they landed on the ones already on the ground sickening. I watched helplessly as a black hole appeared on the ground and sucked them away. It beckoned to me, offering solace and refuge. Just one step and I’d be free of this nightmare. Just one step.

So, what do you think? 🙂

An interview with HUNTED author Ednah Walters

HUNTED  (book #2 The Guardian Legacy series)

Hunted (The Guardian Legacy, #3)
Bran and Lil may have escaped an attempt to lure Lil to the dark side, and recovered the contracts damned people signed with Bran when he was a soul collector, but someone forgot to tell them that no one switches sides or cancels contracts without consequences.
Hunted by an unknown but powerful enemy, Lil, Bran and the Guardians must seek help from unlikely sources  to avert total annihilation of the Guardians. When they finally face their enemy, one of them may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

About the Author:

Ednah is the author of The Guardian Legacy series, a YA fantasy series about children of the fallen angels, who fight demons and protect mankind. AWAKENED, the prequel was released in September 2010 with rave reviews. BETRAYED, book one in the series was released by her new publisher Spencer Hill Press in June 2012 and HUNTED, the third installment, will be released April 2013. She’s working on the next book in the series, FORGOTTEN.

Ednah Walters will now take your questions:

Thanks for having me.

Q. Great to have you! Can you tell us about your story?

The Guardian Legacy series is about teen Guardians, part human and part fallen angels children, who fight demons.

In HUNTED, Lil, my main character, is concerned with erasing her boyfriend Bran’s evil past by canceling the contracts he’d signed when he worked for a demon. What she and her friends don’t realize is there are consequences to canceling contracts and someone will have to pay.

Q. How did you come up with the idea?

The entire Guardian Legacy series idea started with the kris dagger. Once I learned about how Malays and Indonesians believed it had special powers, I wrote my series around it. As for Hunted, the idea for the villain came from an episode of Supernatural. I love Dean and Sam Winchester

Q. What’s your main character’s greatest strength, biggest flaw?

Lil’s greatest strength and flaw is loyalty. Once she believes someone deserves her loyalty, she’d do whatever it takes to help and defend them. It gets her in some very crazy spots.

Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Plotting. I hate to plot, yet I must to some degree.
Q. What one question do you wish an interviewer would ask you but never has?

How come you don’t have your pictures anywhere online? LOL.

Q. A-hem, camera shy? I actually wondered about that! What are you working on now? Do you tend to work on multiple projects or one at a time?

I’m working on the next GL story, FORGOTTEN.

I’m also working on a new series, RUNES. Book 1 will be released May 20th, and I’m working on book 2.

I’m also working on an adult romance since I write contemporary romance under E. B. Walters.

I multi-task with the best of them.

Q. Nice! What is your favorite line from this book?

“Yours always, mine forever.”

Lil and Bran just made their vows in the spur of the moment and exchanged them while dangling in mid-hair. Well, not exactly dangling. He was flying with her in his arms. Then he decided they didn’t need rituals to claim each other. They had the elements as their witnesses.

Q. Did you always want to be a writer?

No, I wanted to be a chemist at some pharmaceutical lab, making new drugs.

Q. So, you’re a science girl? Awesome. Was there any part that you struggled with or avoided writing?

Fight scenes…nightmare to write

Q. What are you reading right now? Do you read a book at a time or more than one?

I wish I had more time to read. I’m reading a fellow Spencer Hill Press author’s book. Finn Fannigan.

Q. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Any hobbies?

I’m a serious zumba dancer. It’s how I stay sane and stay balanced.

Q. What was your favorite book/who was your favorite writer as a teen?

Nancy Drew series

Q. Who is your favorite writer now?

Cassandra Clare

Q, What is the best young adult book you’ve read so far in 2013?

Kelly Hashway’s Touch of Death
Q. What do you see emerging as the next big trend in young adult literature?

Contemporary romance. My agent told me and she’s always right.
Q. Have you ever wanted to quit writing? Why? What made you keep going?

Oh yes, I’ve wanted to quit. When those rejection letters kept coming, I wanted to quit. When my sells are pitiful, I want to quit, but you know what, writing is like reading and I’d shrivel up if I didn’t write or read.

Q. If you could have a career besides being an author, what would it be?

Cosmetologist

That’s awesome! Thank you so much for being here today! Its been great to have you 🙂
