Sarvenaz Tash was born in Tehran, Iran and grew up on Long Island, NY. She received her BFA in Film and Television from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. This means she got to spend most of college running around and making movies (it was a lot of fun). She has dabbled in all sorts of writing including screenwriting, copywriting, and professional tweeting. Sarvenaz currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, and I’ve heard she can watch 22 movies in a row, but of course, it’s just a rumor.

And now on to the the EXCLUSIVE CONTENT … (yay!)

Behind the Cover of The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love

It’s always equal parts thrilling and scary to see the cover of your book for the first time. On the one hand, you get to see the professionally produced artwork that’s going to signify your story on bookshelves and e-readers and websites, etc. On the other, you’re relying on someone else’s interpretation of that story.

Spoiler alert: with the cover of The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love, I needn’t have worried.  My editor told me in advance that art director Lucy Ruth Cummins would be designing the cover. I knew Lucy’s work, you see (she’s designed the covers of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Since You’ve Been Gone, and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer to name just a few) and I was already a huge fan. Then my editor asked me if I had any ideas for the cover myself. I gave her a couple (among them: a peek at main character Graham’s nerdy bookshelves and a stylized comic book idea), but a few weeks later, she came back with a preliminary sketch from Lucy. It looked like this:

Sketch

Obviously, it’s a very rough sketch, but again, I just assumed it would look amazing because: Lucy.

Then a little while later, they sent me the portfolios of a few of the models they were considering for the cover. Lucy and I both agreed: wonderful, redheaded Tim Sundholm was the one.

Tim

And then a few weeks after that, Lucy, Tim, and photographer Dolly Faibyshev went to the Javits Center (where the book takes place!) and a shoot took place.

Lucy has been kind enough to share some of these behind-scenes-photos that she took.

Photo1

Apparently the Mylar balloons are from Duane Reade.

Photo2

I think by the end of the shoot, Tim had possibly eaten an entire box of chocolates (clearly he suffers for his art. J)

Photo3

An alternate idea with Graham plucking daisy petals.

Photo4

From l-r: Hair and make-up artist Agata Smentek, photographer Dolly Faibyshev, and model Tim Sundholm. (Yes, it’s SUPER cool that there was a make-up artist working to get someone to look like my main character!)

And a few weeks later, I got this in my inbox:

3P JKT Geeks_Guide.indd

And I just about died. Because it’s perfect. I know you guys don’t know Graham yet but this photo…this is Graham. And the font. And the colors. AND THERE’S FOIL.

In short, I don’t care if my love for this cover is unrequited or not. To me, it is perfect.

 Blurb:

Graham met his best friend, Roxana, when he moved into her neighborhood eight years ago, and she asked him which Hogwarts house he’d be sorted into. Graham has been in love with her ever since.

But now they’re sixteen, still neighbors, still best friends. And Graham and Roxy share more than ever—moving on from their Harry Potter obsession to a serious love of comic books.

When Graham learns that the creator of their favorite comic, The Chronicles of Althena, is making a rare appearance at this year’s New York Comic Con, he knows he must score tickets. And the event inspires Graham to come up with the perfect plan to tell Roxy how he really feels about her. He’s got three days to woo his best friend at the coolest, kookiest con full of superheroes and supervillains. But no one at a comic book convention is who they appear to be…even Roxy. And Graham is starting to realize fictional love stories are way less complicated than real-life ones.

Hi! Julie here again. Wasn’t that awesome? I love to get a look at anything behind the scenes.

Don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of signed books by me, Julie Reece and more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 22 Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the GOLD TEAM and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!

Nobody's-Goddess-Cover

In a village of masked men, magic compels each man to love only one woman and to follow the commands of his “goddess” without question. A woman may reject the only man who will love her if she pleases, but she will be alone forever. And a man must stay masked until his goddess returns his love—and if she can’t or won’t, he remains masked forever.

Seventeen-year-old Noll isn’t in the mood to celebrate. Her childhood friends have paired off and her closest companion, Jurij, found his goddess in Noll’s own sister. Desperate to find a way to break this ancient spell, Noll instead discovers why no man has ever chosen her.

Thus begins a dangerous game between the choice of woman versus the magic of man. And the stakes are no less than freedom and happiness, life and death—and neither is willing to lose.

TBAIK-Cover-v2

To Bear an Iron Key is the first in a new and exciting series from acclaimed author Jackie Morse Kessler.

Five years ago, the young witch Bromwyn refused a gift from the powerful fairy king. Tonight, on Midsummer, that decision comes back to haunt her. When her best friend Rusty picks the wrong pocket, he and Bromwyn are all that stand between their village and the rampaging fairies who have pushed through the World Door. If they cannot outwit the fairy king and queen before the World Door closes at sunrise, the friends will lose everything—their village, Bromwyn’s magic, and Rusty’s life.

From To Bear an Iron Key by Jackie Morse Kessler: “Bromwyn turned to face the burning fields. Reaching deep inside of herself, she closed her eyes and touched the core of her power, the place where her magic lived, where it connected her to all of Nature. She held onto that magic, let it fill her almost to the bursting point, and then she cast it out onto the fields. It blanketed the rows of spelt, and she felt as it rode the wind—Air—and then touched the grain—Earth—and then sizzled around the fire.”

About-the-Author

JMK

Jackie Morse Kessler grew up in Brooklyn, NY, with a cranky cat and overflowing shelves filled with dolls and books. Now she’s in Upstate NY with another cranky cat, a loving husband, two sons, and overflowing shelves filled with dragons and books (except when her sons steal her dragons). She has a bachelor’s degree in English and American Literature, and yet she’s never read any Jane Austen (with or without zombies). She also has a master’s degree in media ecology. (The living study of technology and culture. Which is cool, but she still can’t figure out how to use Tweetdeck.)

Jackie spends a lot of time writing, reading, and getting distracted by bright and shiny new ideas. (She just came up with a new idea right now.) She has a weakness for chocolate and a tendency to let her cat take over her office chair.

The-Emissary-Cover

For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.

When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret.

To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.

Jed #2) by Scott Craven

As the fall semester ends and kids head home for winter break,
Jed and his parents gather for the annual exchanging of gift lists. Once again,
Jed asks for a dog, leading to a heated argument and a firm “no.” But
when Jed spots a stray, he chases it until the dog darts into the street where
it is struck and killed by a car. Grief stricken by what he’s done, Jed cradles
the dead dog in his arms. Soon, ooze from the dog mixes with teardrops from

school with their kids. Enter the mysterious NZN Network. They’ve been
distributing anti-zombie propaganda in an effort to get Jed expelled. But Jed
wonders if the creation of Tread has caused his relationship with Luke to sour.
And why, just as he seems to need them the most, have his best friends
abandoned him? Could they have bought in to the anti-zombie way of thinking?
Was creating Tread a mistake Jed will live to regret?
When Tread goes missing,

Tracy Tam: Santa
Command by Krystalyn Drown
Summary:
Tracy Tam doesn’t really believe in Santa Claus, at least
not like the rest of us do. She also doesn’t believe that Santa can possibly
deliver all of those presents in one night, to children around the world,
without a little help from science. A flying sleigh can only be powered by jet
engines, after all, and Santa’s magical abilities can only be the result of
altered DNA. How else could he know what every little girl and boy wants for
Christmas and who has been naughty or nice? In order to test her theories,
Tracy sneaks onto Santa’s sleigh then ends up at Santa Command, where a team of
(gasp!) humans monitor Santa’s big night. When Tracy attempts to hack into
their computers, she accidentally introduces a virus into the system. As a
result, three states get knocked out of sync with the rest of the world
(oops!). Santa won’t be able to deliver all the presents in time! Now, Tracy
must fix time and help Santa, but she has no idea how. How can a girl who
doesn’t believe help Santa and save Christmas before it’s too late? With a
little Christmas magic, of course!

Louder Than Words Book Blitz and Giveaway! @Iris_St_Clair @swoonromance

A lot going on today on the ‘ole bloggerooni …

Fine, so that’s not technically a word,

but I’ve read this book, and loved it, so I’m happy to present:

OMGosh I’m so stinkin’ excited!

This book needs to be in the world!

Louder Than Words
Release Date: 09/16/14
Swoon Romance

Summary from Goodreads:

Disappointment has been on speed dial in Ellen Grayson’s life lately. Her
dad died, her mom numbs the grief with drugs and alcohol, and her so-called
friends have slowly abandoned her.
Trusting a popular teacher with her troubles should have been safe and
should NOT have led to an unwelcome seduction attempt that made her desperate
to escape the final moments of Junior year. Lesson learned. Best to keep all
the sordid details to herself and trust no one.
Enter Rex Jacobi, a cocky boy, recently transplanted from New York City
and fellow summer camp employee. Though his quick wit and confidence draws her
in, she can’t let him get too close. And summer is just long enough and hot
enough to keep a boy like that at arm’s length.
But by the time Rex’s charm wears down her resistance, it’s too late.
He’s put Ellen on the “just friends” shelf and has shifted his
romantic attentions to the impossibly annoying and perky anti-Ellen. Even
worse, the teacher who tried to get her to sleep with him is still at it,
preying on other girls while Ellen struggles to come to terms with what
happened.

With her ability to trust as shaky as a chastity vow on prom night, Ellen
must decide if she has enough remaining courage to speak up about the
well-liked teacher and risk retribution, tell Rex how she really feels about
him and risk heartbreak, or hold all her secrets inside. After all, it’s the
only safe place she knows when the only thing louder than words is the fear of
being rejected.

Louder Than Words Excerpt  — “First Aid Burlesque”

He glares as Rex passes. My brother is on the large size—about six feet and built like a football player, though he played with drums, and not pigskins, on the football field. He’s usually so mellow people no longer notice his size after five minutes of meeting him. Since becoming my guardian, however, he’s taken his role a bit too seriously. He’s not averse to using physical intimidation to scare off any males who try to get too close to me. For the most part, I’ve been grateful for it. At least he cares.

Rex doesn’t show the usual signs of nervousness at my brother’s intimidation attempts. Best to whisk him outside as quickly as possible, which I do.

“Sorry about my brother.”

“Wow, yeah. I suppose it probably did look suspicious from all sorts of angles—your face, the two of us crammed into your little bathroom, my hands all over you.” He smirks and doesn’t seem the least bit perturbed.

“Your hands were not all over me.”

“I was putting on the Band-Aid. They were there.”

His exaggerated insistence about something that wasn’t borders ludicrous. “You’re so weird, Rex Jacobi. Most boys would be swearing up and down that nothing happened, over-compensating even. But you … ” I shake my head. “You know my brother could throw you against the wall hard enough to make you stick, right?”

“You think your brother would do something like that?”

He’s got me there. “Well … no.”

“Didn’t think so.”

“You don’t have to look so smug about it.” I point to the street. “Okay, so I guess you better go then. Don’t want you to be late for your date.” I give him a slug in the arm and hope it’s light enough to convey no more than minor annoyance, boredom, or gentle teasing.

He nods. “Yeah, sure.”

For a second I think he’s going to say something else because his mouth drops open and he draws in a breath. The moment passes and he trots down the apartment building stairs, doesn’t even glance back over his shoulder.

The look on my brother’s face, on the other hand, is both infuriating and heart-breaking. Infuriating he thinks I’d act like such a ho, and heart-breaking because absolutely nothing happened to even give Robbie a moment’s worry about my chastity.

About the Author

Iris St. Clair is the pen name for a long-suffering cubicle worker by day, a Walter Mitty-like dreamer by night. (Her alter ego Tatiana Ivanadance also choreographs gravity-defying routines in those fantasies, but that’s another bio.)
No matter what genre she writes, she prefers witty, insecure heroines and kind, persistent heroes able to break through to the gooey heart inside.
In high school she was voted most likely to win at Monopoly and Clue, but least likely to throw a ball anywhere near a target. Thank goodness writing requires less hand-eye coordination, punctuation errors notwithstanding.

Iris believes in the two-year “fish or cut bait” dating rule and has a 20+ year marriage and two teenaged sons as proof of concept. She lives, writes, dreams and dances in the rainy Portland, OR area.
