Book Cover Trends

Hey guys,

I don’t pretend to be an expert, in fact, I promise I’m not. However, I have noticed two trends in Young Adult book covers. Have you seen the gorgeous girls on the cover of a lot of recent books? Swathed in yards of fabric, these heroines are made to look like princesses at a ball? Maybe this isn’t so new. Maybe I really have been under a rock, but I’m noticing now. Here are some examples of what I mean…

Uh, yeah. So who wants to be my date to the prom, because these covers totally make me want to go. Come on, even if you’re not a girly-girl, you want it. Tell the truth.

No? Well then maybe the opposite is true. I’ve noticed the other side of the coin, and these women aren’t to be messed with. What about…

The mysterious, tough, or just plain intimidating covers. Are these covers more your cup of tea? I want to know who these girls are! No, scratch that. I hope the stories are amazingly well written, because the covers make me want to be these girls, in whatever adventure they find themselves.

I guess in the end, it’s personal preference. If the first group makes your heart beat faster as you imagine the cute guy you know they are about to dance with, so be it. For some, they are gagging on the rolls of cotton candy, pink tulle. The other group likes their heroines lean and mean, ready to do battle along side a hot guy that might need rescuing. Readers who like the first group might not love heroines who lop off body parts or roll around in the dirt.

Opposing camps? A foot in each? Sort of fun to contemplate, I think. Which reader group are you?
